A Day At The Beach

Saturday, September 3, 2011

Are you going to the beach this weekend? I spent an entire week with my family at the beach and I learned a few tricks to keep everyone happy. My visions of a relaxing beach vacation were nearly shattered when it turned out that Ivy absolutely hated the sand. She walked in it like it was quicksand and when it stuck to her little hands she cried, loudly. Very loudly.

I had to think of a solution, fast. I thought if bringing the outdoors in can make your home more beautiful, maybe bringing the indoors out could make the outside more comfortable! That in mind I bought a few new beach necessities.

A queen sized quilt with a bright paisley print (the better to hide the salsa drips!) and keep Ivy out of the dreaded sand. A miniature picnic table, made from responsibly harvested hardwood, was the perfect thing to keep actual sand out of our sandwiches. A few designer throw pillows (one does want to fashionable at the beach!) made the perfect spot to catch some z’s. I set everything up under a giant rainbow umbrella, which not only kept my little ones out of the sun, it saved me from certain embarrassment as I did not have to wildly flap my arms about at other family members yelling, “we’re over here!”.

And then a miracle happened... the tears dried up, the sun literally came out and we all had a wonderful time. Wishing you a harmonious holiday weekend! Emily
